Cryogenic treatment is succeeding in tooling for metal forming and die cutting. The CRYObest® process usually gives benefits to the materials commonly used for these types of tools. It can improve the performance of cold work steels (i.e. 1.2379) for blanking dies, punches, cutters…, hot work steels (as H13) for injection moulds, hot and warm forging dies… and high speed steels used for sheet blanking and punching and, sometimes, for cold and hot forming.

The treatment affects the entire part and in a permanent way. Therefore, a tool can be re-sharpened as many times as needed without losing the effects got with the treatment. At the same time it is fully compatible with the PVD coatings (TiN, TiCN, etc). The hardness is not significantly affected and the tools do not distort. In fact, the changes are undetectable.

Punching tooling is one of the applications where good results can be achieved with the use of the CRYObest® treatment. Treated punches and dies used in automatic punching machines and presses for cutting and blanking several type of sheet metals, usually more than double their life between re-sharpening®.

Another application to remark on is the improved performance of treated blanking dies removing the flashes in forged or injected parts.

Not only can the tools for metal cutting be bettered with the CRYObest® treatment. The cutters and knives for cutting plastic, paper, tobacco… are multiplying their work life as well.
