| The process affects the
entire part in a permanent way. Therefore,
a tool
can be re-sharpened
as many times as needed without losing
the effects achieved with the treatment.
At the
same time, the CRYObest® process is
fully compatible with existing PVD coatings
(TiN,
TiCN, etc).
After test results and the experience
obtained by some of our customers, it is
interesting
to remark on some of the applications where
the COLDfire process is successful. One
of those is gear cutting (hobs,
cutters, broaches…)
Treated tools frequently double the number
of pieces cut between re-sharpening. It
is easy to realise the savings that can
be achieved
in tooling costs and the increase in productivity.
Less tools (normally very expensive), less
re-sharpening and re-coating (if done)
to produce the same number of pieces. The
cost
per piece can be drastically reduced.
Another
type of HSS tools, such as mills, drill
bits, saws, cutters…, can double
or even triple their life (in one of the
most stunning applications, a treated mill
for machining aluminium tube has multiplied
by more than six times the number of parts
cut between re-sharpening). On the other
hand, there are some applications where
treated tools do not show significant improvements.
Treated
carbide inserts can also be treated with
great success, although for these
types of tools the results are very dependent
on
the base material. In general the tools
keep sharp longer and wear less. Some
investigations recently carried out, indicate
that cutting
speed could have an influence: the higher
the speed the more the life increase
of a
treated tool. This is probably the reason
why treated carbide inserts for high
speed die sinking milling are yielding
good results.
