Applications Welding

The critical factors in spot welding copper electrodes are the mechanical strength and the thermal conductivity. Their combination is the key to a good performance. However, both features are difficult to bring about together simultaneously. The more strength a copper alloy has, the worse the thermal conductivity is.

Copper responds very well to the CRYObest® process. Treated electrodes show increases in mechanical strength and thermal conductivity. The subsequent performance improvement mainly depends on the geometry of the electrode. In some cases, the result has been truly impressive. An automotive supplier is using electrodes made of Mallory 100 (CuCoBe alloy) that last up to 6 times longer after the treatment.

The CRYObest® process affects the whole part and in a permanent way. Therefore, an electrode or cap can be re-sharpened as many times as needed without losing the effects achieved with the treatment.

The longer life of an electrode not only gives cost savings, but also improves the quality of the welding. As a consequence, the number of rejections or reworks is reduced.

It is important to remark that the treatment can be used for welded joints as well. Welding stresses can be relieved with the treatment.
